...with the starter making abnormal noises. That's what Firestone's diagnosis was. Curious enough, they don't mess with those things, so I had to send it to a stealership dealership, who will look at my only car Monday. -_-. It's like a soap opera, the plot keeps getting thicker.

Also, no rental places were willing to do pickup or were open nearby. I had to call my pastor, who was spending time with his week-old child, to pick up my mom, sister, wife, my daughter and me.

I'm also really worried about the dealership too. Sure, they will get it fixed, but how much will it cost? I'm not exactly made of money.

This will be the longest time I will have the car in the shop, I'm uneasy. Sure, it's a PT, but it's my kindred car spirit; misunderstood, slightly ugly, but has the heart of a racer. I don't like the idea of it bring in someone else's hands. Stressed out....

so you tried beating on the starter first to no avail? I would have grabbed some wire and jumped the solenoid direct from the battery to get home at least.

It was a 40-50 minute trip. If it was just me, ok then. But I had others with me, including my 2 yr old daughter. The way the firestone guys talked, it sounded like there was a possibility of it shutting off while driving,

....I made a executive decision to not risk it. Family safety comes first, especially when I don't known everything.

Usually, its around $90-120/hr to you. So, an hour of diag + other expenses might run ~$100+

If they determine a module is at fault (like the TIPM/Gateway), figure another hour of labor + part cost + "shop supplies" . Modules vary in cost greatly. If you can find something on the internet for cheaper, some shops will even install for you- but may not cover any temporary warranty period on the work performed.

Well the diag is technically already done. Still, I have no idea where the money will come from, :/.

yeah in the moment especially. It is tough and a little weird to have my girls with me in old bangers but it always seems to be their mom who breaks down

her-what does it mean when the oil can light comes on?

me-stop the engine right now

her-oh it has been on for 20 minutes and now the car wont start

me-ok then

End of my v70R right there...

Glad to hear you got home, let me know what it ends up being

Yep, and I also rediscovered I get car sick when not driving. So I don't even feel good right now. I was in the back seat of a Jeep Commander, :/.

Thanks. The worst part about being a father and a husband is that I need to keep my cool, so I don't worry anyone else. I actually punched a vending machine because I accidently cancelled the tow truck. I was furious.

Being a cool headed adult is difficult at times, :(.

Yeah. Makes the situation even tougher.

I have to do the same with my gf. If for some reason things go south in a situation I have to stay calm or be optimistic otherwise things get worse. Like when my car broke down and I thought it was gonna be really expensive. She immediately started stressing out about the money and me working. I had to formulate a plan fast just to keep her from getting more stressed. Despite my stress I kept a calm face. I can't imagine doing it in your situation with your whole family and kids. It's easier managing one persons stress. You are probably near sainthood.

Ha, thanks, :). Though I've had a lot of practice with this 'sainthood'. As my mom puts it, I'm the level-headed one of the family. Though I needed to be as I was the negotiator between family members sometimes. My personality is very passive, but it's only that way because...well...I didn't really like how my family acted at times. They can be upset easily, and overreact. I'm that way by nature, but I aspired to be different, :).

Pro tip: Have the shop that does the repair also diagnose the car for themselves. That way, if it is misdiagnosed, it's on them and not you. If they tell you a module will fix it but then it doesn't, you shouldn't have to pay for it. But if Firestone said to put module A in, then you tell the the dealer to put module A in and it doesn't fix it all of the cost will be on you.

Well, I had it towed to Firestone because I thought it might be a quick fix, and the dealerships service division would be closed on Saturday. otherwise, I'm just following a series of events. I thought maybe it was the starter or solenoid.

I would have done the same thing on your situation. Just make sure to have the dealer diagnose it for themselves, don't go in telling them to replace part A. Tell them the whole story, Firestone included. There's a good chance Firestone is wrong, they have a tendency to hire techs of a lesser caliber than dealers do (I've worked for both, multiple locations). Not saying dealers are perfect, clearly they are nowhere near, but Firestone doesn't really cater to people needing diagnostics.
